Union Volleyball Falls Against Brescia and Campbellsville

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University women's volleyball team (0-10) dropped both of its matches Wednesday, falling to Brescia (4-5) and Campbellsville (8-6).

In the first match, Union lost 3-1 to Brescia (25-18, 25-11, 19-25, 25-19). In the second match, the Bulldogs were swept by Campbellsville 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-13).

Game 1 vs. Brescia

Brescia opened the first set with a 12-5 run and maintained control to win 25-18.

Union took an early 3-1 lead in the second set, but the Bearcats responded with a dominant 19-3 run to take a 20-6 lead. Despite a brief three-point spurt from the Bulldogs, the set ended 25-11 in Brescia's favor.

The Bulldogs came out strong in the third set, jumping to a 9-2 lead behind four combined service aces from Natalie Sanders and Lain Prather, and three kills from Berkli Benefield. Brescia cut the lead to three with an 8-4 run, but Union answered with an 8-3 stretch to go up 20-13 and held on for a 25-19 win.

Brescia started the fourth set on a 4-1 run and led until Union surged back to take a 14-13 lead after a 7-1 run. However, the Bearcats closed the match with a 12-5 run to win the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.

Benefield led Union with 16 kills. Emily Shumaker followed with 12 kills, while Cynthia Davidson added eight.

Game 2 vs. Campbellsville

Union got off to a strong start in the first set, taking a 4-1 lead. Campbellsville responded to tie it at 7-7, then took over with an 18-4 run—highlighted by four straight kills from Mya Leach—to win the set 25-11.

In the second set, the Tigers again jumped ahead 5-2, but Union tied it at 7-7. The teams traded points to reach 11-11 before Campbellsville pulled away with a 14-6 run to take the set 25-17.

The Tigers opened the third set with a 9-2 run. Union cut the lead to 17-13, but Campbellsville closed the match on an 8-0 run to win the set 25-13 and complete the sweep.

Benefield again led Union with three kills.

Union hosts its first home match of the season at Robsion Arena on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 4 p.m. against Cumberlands (Ky.).
