Union Volleyball Falls to Johnson in Straight Sets
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Union Commonwealth University's women's volleyball team (6-14, 6-4 AAC) fell 3-0 to Johnson University (20-5, 8-2 AAC) on Tuesday evening at the Graham Center.
This marked the second scheduled meeting between the two teams this season, though the first match was postponed and is set to be played at a later date.
Johnson swept the match in straight sets, winning 25-19, 25-9 and 25-22.
Game Recap
Set 1: Johnson 25, Union Commonwealth 19
The Royals scored the first points of the game, taking an early 6-0 lead. The Bulldogs battled back to within three at 8-5 with a kill from Gabrielly Dos Santos. Johnson followed with a 4-0 run to extend the lead to 12-5. Union cut the deficit to two at 16-14, but the Royals closed out the set with a 9-6 run to win it 25-19.
Set 2: Johnson 25, Union Commonwealth 9
Johnson started the second set much like the first, going on an early run to take an 8-2 lead. The teams traded points to make it 11-6. After a Union service error, the Royals went on a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 18-6. The Bulldogs managed just three more points as Johnson took the set 25-9 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set 3: Johnson 25, Union Commonwealth 22
Union opened the final set with a kill from Berkli Benefield to take a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs held the advantage until the Royals went on a 3-0 run to go up 5-3. Union responded and regained the lead at 9-8, extending it to 14-10. Johnson then answered with a 6-0 run to take a 16-14 lead. The Bulldogs battled back, with a kill from Jersey Glass putting them ahead 18-17. They held the lead until 22-19, but were unable to close out the set. Johnson rallied with a final 6-0 run to win the set 25-22 and complete the sweep, 3-0.
