BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Union Commonwealth University's women's volleyball team (6-13, 6-3 AAC) defeated Montreat (0-10, 0-10 AAC) Saturday afternoon at Robsion Arena, 3-0.
Last season, the Bulldogs and the Cavaliers played only once. Union would win the matchup 3-1. This year, Union would take all three sets. The scores of the sets were: 25-14, 25-14, and 25-22.
Game Recap
Set 1: Union Commonwealth 25, Montreat 14
The Cavaliers would get on the board first in the first set. The Bulldogs would respond by tying it up. This trend would continue until the score was 4-3, in favor of Montreat. Union would then go on the offensive, making a 10-1 run, which was highlighted by three kills coming from Rylee Stookey, bringing the score to 13-5. The Cavaliers would make a 2-0 run, but would allow the Bulldogs to make a 5-1 run, making it 18-8. Montreat would make a 4-1 run, but Union would finish the Cavaliers off with a 6-2 run, winning the set 25-14.
Top Performer: Stookey led the Bulldogs with four kills.
Set 2: Union Commonwealth 25, Montreat 14
Montreat would take an early 1-0 lead, and Union's Berkli Benefield would level it at 1-1. The game would remain tied for another point at 2-2. The Bulldogs would make a 5-2 run, taking a 7-4 lead. The Cavaliers would battle and cut the lead to two points at 9-11, they would proceed to make a 3-0 run, taking the lead at 12-11 and forcing a Union timeout. Following the timeout, the Bulldogs went on the attack, going on a 14-2 run to win the set 25-14, taking a 2-0 lead into the third set.
Top Performers: Emily Shumaker led with four kills, Benefield and Jersey Glass would follow with three each.
Set 3: Union Commonwealth 25, Montreat 22
Montreat would take an early 9-4 in this set. Union would answer with a 5-0 run, tying the game at 9-9. The Cavaliers would take the lead again, and keep it until it was 14-13. The Bulldogs would tie the game at 14-14 and then take the lead after going on a 7-1 run, making it 20-15. Montreat would cut the lead to one at 21-20 following a 5-1 run, but would ultimately fall as Union took four of the last six points to win the set 25-22, and the game 3-0.
Top Performers: Benefield led with four kills, Glass and Stookey followed with three.
