Union Volleyball Falls to No. 20 Cumberlands in Straight Sets

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Union Commonwealth University's women's volleyball team (0-10) fell to No. 20 Cumberlands (13-0) in straight sets, 3-0, Saturday afternoon.

The Patriots took the match by scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-5.

Game Recap

Set 1: Cumberlands 25, Union Commonwealth 16
Cumberlands opened the first set with a 4-1 run, but Union responded with a 4-1 run of its own to tie the score at 5-5 and briefly took the lead at 6-5. The Patriots then seized momentum with a 15-6 run to make it 20-13. Union rallied with a 3-1 run—highlighted by two kills from Emily Shumaker—to cut the deficit to 21-16, but Cumberlands closed it out with four straight points.

Shumaker led the Bulldogs with five kills in the set, while Berkli Benefield added three.

Set 2: Cumberlands 25, Union Commonwealth 17
The second set began similarly, with Cumberlands jumping out to a 5-1 lead. Union capitalized on four Patriot errors and a kill by Rylee Stookey to take a 6-5 lead. The teams traded points until an 8-8 tie, but a 4-0 Cumberlands run made it 12-8. After exchanging three points apiece to make it 15-11, Union pulled within one at 15-14 following a 3-0 run. However, the Bulldogs couldn't complete the comeback, falling 25-17. Cumberlands led the match 2-0.

Stookey and Shumaker paced Union in the set with three kills each.

Set 3: Cumberlands 25, Union Commonwealth 5
Cumberlands dominated the third set from the outset, starting with a 5-0 run and later extending the lead to 12-4. The Patriots closed the set on a 13-1 run to secure the sweep, winning 25-5.

Jersey Glass and Benefield were the only Union players to record kills in the final set.
