Union Volleyball Drops Both Games on Day Two of the Cumberlands Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - The Union Commonwealth University volleyball (0-7) team lost both of its games Saturday on day two of the Cumberlands Invitational.

The Bulldogs faced No. 17 Montana Tech (5-2) first and lost 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-14). Later that day, they faced Cumberlands (Ky.) (7-0), losing 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-6)

Game 1: VS No.17 Montana Tech

Set 1
Union and Montana Tech traded points early, with the Bulldogs holding an 11-10 lead. The Orediggers responded with a 6-1 run to go ahead 16-12. Union cut the deficit with three straight points, but Montana Tech closed the set on a 9-3 run to win 25-18.

Set 2
Montana Tech opened the second set with a 5-1 run. Union narrowed the gap to 10-7, but the Orediggers pulled away again, extending the lead to 15-7. They maintained control and finished on an 8-3 run to win 25-13.

Set 3
Union briefly led 2-1, but Montana Tech answered with a 7-2 run to go up 8-4. The Bulldogs cut it to 12-10 before the Orediggers went on an 8-1 surge to build a 20-12 advantage. Montana Tech closed out the set 25-14 to sweep the match 3-0.

Berkli Benefield led Union with seven kills, followed by Rylee Stookey with five.

Game 2: VS Cumberlands
Set 1
The opening set stayed close until Cumberlands went on a 9-3 run to take a 14-7 lead. Union cut the margin to 14-9, but the Patriots extended the lead to 21-12 before finishing off a 25-16 win.

Set 2
Union answered Cumberlands' quick start to tie it 3-3. The teams were even again at 6-6 before the Patriots broke away with an 11-2 run. Cumberlands' Sara Zampedri sealed the set with three late kills in a 25-13 win.

Set 3
Cumberlands dominated from the start, racing out to an 11-0 lead. After a brief Union response, the Patriots went on another 10-0 run to make it 22-3. They closed out the set 25-6 and swept the match 3-0.

Benefield again led Union with seven kills, while Stookey added six.

Up next, Union faces Brescia (Ky.) in Campbellsville, Kentucky, on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 4 p.m.
