How It Happened
First Quarter: Union Commonwealth 14, Pikeville 19
The game opened with a series of back-and-forth lead changes, with Union holding a 7–6 edge after a Noe layup at the 6:26 mark. Pikeville responded with an 11–0 run, fueled by multiple three-pointers, to regain control. The Bulldogs cut into the deficit in the closing minutes of the half, highlighted by a three-pointer that junior guard Rachel Smith answered and another layup from Noe. Union entered the break trailing, 19–14.
Second Quarter: Union Commonwealth 23, Pikeville 40
Noe kept the Bulldogs within striking distance to open the third quarter, scoring three times in the first two minutes. Pikeville answered with a 10–2 surge midway through the period to extend its advantage. Despite late scoring from freshman guard Aniyah Carter, Pikeville continued to build momentum with another run. Union trailed by 17 at the break, facing a 40–23 deficit.
Third Quarter: Union Commonwealth 35, Pikeville 60
The third quarter opened at a slow pace before Noe scored inside to get Union going. Noe and Pirkle added a few baskets, but the Bulldogs were unable to chip away at the deficit as the Bears continued to capitalize on second-chance opportunities. Union entered the final quarter trailing, 60–35.
Fourth Quarter: Union Commonwealth 47, Pikeville 71
Pikeville controlled much of the fourth quarter, extending its lead early and capitalizing on second-chance opportunities to maintain momentum. The Bulldogs continued to compete behind strong rebounding and scoring from Pirkle, while freshman forward Aymanni Wynn added four free throws to trim the margin late in the frame. Pikeville closed the game at the line to secure the 71–47 final.
