Union Women's Basketball Falls to Midway
MIDWAY, Ky. – Union Commonwealth University's women's basketball team (0-5) fell to Midway (5-1) 64-97 on Wednesday at Marshall Gymnasium. This was the first matchup between the two schools in over a decade, with the last meeting ending in a 91-76 Union win on Nov. 13, 2015.
Sophomore center Lindsey Pirkle led the Bulldogs with a double-double, scoring 23 points and grabbing 12 rebounds while going 7 of 8 from the free-throw line. This marked her highest scoring game of the season.
How It Happened
First Quarter: Union Commonwealth 14, Midway 31
Union opened the scoring at the free-throw line with two points from senior guard Isis Rodgers. Lindsey Pirkle added eight points through putbacks and free throws (4-for-4), while sophomore point guard Emrey Glover had a layup. The Bulldogs limited second chance opportunities with key defensive rebounds from Rodgers, Pirkle, and freshman forward Aymanni Wynn. Freshman forward Kylie Noe recorded a block and added a basket assisted by junior guard Rachel Smith.
Second Quarter: Union Commonwealth 28, Midway 53
Union tried to keep pace but trailed 53-28 at halftime. Sophomore forward Harper Coffey hit a three-pointer, Pirkle converted layups off offensive rebounds, and Rodgers contributed points and rebounds. Smith added a late three-pointer, and the Bulldogs forced multiple turnovers, generating scoring opportunities inside and from beyond the arc.
Third Quarter: Union Commonwealth 40, Midway 77
Trailing 77-40 after three quarters, Noe scored inside, Wynn hit a three-pointer, and freshmen guard Aniyah Carter added points from the free-throw line. Pirkle and Noe controlled the boards, while Rodgers and Sarah Smith assisted key baskets. Despite forcing several turnovers, the Bulldogs struggled to convert consistently.
Fourth Quarter: Union Commonwealth 64, Midway 97
Union scored 24 points in the fourth, led by Pirkle's 11 points, including 2 layups and three free throws. Freshmen guard Isabella Stith, Smith, Coffey, and Carter each added points from layups and free throws. The Bulldogs forced turnovers and grabbed offensive rebounds but could not cut into Midway's lead.
