BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Union Commonwealth University's women's basketball team (1-4, 0-2 AAC) defeated Alice Lloyd (1-5, 2-0 CAC) on Thursday night at Robsion Arena, 91-58.
Junior guard Rachel Smith led the Bulldogs with a season-high 21 points, along with three assists, two steals and a rebound. Freshman forward Kylie Noe followed with a double-double, finishing with a season-best 18 points and 10 rebounds, plus a block and an assist.
Senior center Lindsey Pirkle and sophomore guard Ella Coffey both reached double figures, with Pirkle scoring 15 points with eight rebounds and four assists, and Coffey adding 12 points.
Freshman forward Aymanni Wynn contributed seven rebounds and two steals, while freshman guard Aniyah Carter added seven points and three steals. The Bulldogs had balanced scoring, with 11 of 14 players putting points on the board.
How It Happened
First Quarter: Union Commonwealth 21, Alice Lloyd 13
The Bulldogs got on the board early when Coffey scored two points off an offensive rebound. She continued to dominate in the quarter, making two more layups and recording a steal. Pirkle controlled the paint with five rebounds and a block and also hit two 3-pointers. Smith gained confidence early, hitting a basket from deep around the four-minute mark. The Bulldogs pulled away late in the quarter, with Carter sealing the lead with a layup in the final minute.
Second Quarter: Union Commonwealth 35, Alice Lloyd 22
Union started the second quarter with a burst of energy, led by Wynn, who recorded a steal and pulled down both a defensive and an offensive rebound. Noe came out aggressive, scoring a layup, blocking a shot and drawing multiple trips to the free-throw line. Smith kept her momentum, knocking down two more shots from deep. The Bulldogs steadily widened their lead heading into the second half.
Third Quarter: Union Commonwealth 63, Alice Lloyd 44
Noe opened the third quarter on fire, scoring two quick layups, grabbing three rebounds, adding an assist and a free throw within the first minute. She stayed dominant throughout the quarter, going 4-for-4 from the field and pulling down multiple rebounds. Coffey helped fuel the momentum with several layups and made both of her free throws. Pirkle was perfect from the line and also went 3-for-4 from the field. The Bulldogs were riding a wave of energy at this point, feeding off each other's play and showing growing confidence and excitement on both ends of the court.
Fourth Quarter: Union Commonwealth 91, Alice Lloyd 58
Smith maintained her confidence throughout the game, catching fire with a series of pull-up jumpers and contested 3-pointers. Carter continued her aggressive play, scoring multiple layups after beating defenders off the dribble. The Bulldogs' energy was evident as the team began to mesh, playing with rhythm and feeding off the momentum. Junior guard Natalie Johnson, freshman guard Akeeviah Betts, sophomore forward Harper Coffey and sophomore point guard Sarah Smith all added to the scoring effort.
