UCU Secures Conference Win at Spartanburg Methodist

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Union Commonwealth University's men's soccer team (6-2-2, 5-0-2 AAC) defeated Spartanburg Methodist (2-7-1, 2-5-1 AAC) 1-0 on Wednesday at Nash Soccer Field.

FIRST HALF: UNION COMMONWEALTH 0, Spartanburg Methodist 0

Despite a scoreless first half, Union controlled the pace of play, outshooting Spartanburg 6-1. Oriol Gásquez Pérez led the attack with two attempts, while Samuel Odame, Tyrique Bailey-Edwards, Titus Craig and Jordan Blake each added one. 

The Bulldogs' defense stayed dominant, limiting SMC to just one shot and keeping them off the scoreboard.

SECOND HALF: UNION COMMONWEALTH 1, Spartanburg Methodist 0

In the 58th minute, after consecutive shot attempts from Oriol Gásquez Pérez and Rocco Cimino, Cimino capitalized on a third effort, scoring his first goal of the season off an assist from Zak Hardman to put Union ahead. His strike proved to be the game-winner as the Bulldogs held firm the rest of the way in a 1-0 victory.

Union outshot the Pioneers 13-3, including a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal. Pérez, Cimino and Blake each tallied three shots, while Craig, Bailey-Edwards, Laurin Fürmeier and Odame added one apiece.

Goalkeeper Gabriel Mendoza finished with two saves, earning his sixth shutout of the season. All six Union victories this year have come by shutout.
