Union Men's Basketball Splits Season Series Against Bryan

DAYTON, Tenn. The Union Commonwealth University men's basketball team (10-14, 8-7 AAC) defeated Bryan (9-15, 7-10 AAC) 77-72 on Wednesday night at Summers Gymnasium, splitting the season series.

Jabari Covington and Drew Rhodes each scored 15 points to lead Union Commonwealth. Covington also recorded five assists and five steals. Dallas Rufus added 14 points, and Ali Sakho finished with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

How It Happened

First Half – Union Commonwealth 40, Bryan 39

Bryan opened the game with a 7-2 lead. Union Commonwealth responded with a 7-0 run, taking a 9-7 advantage after a three-pointer by Rhodes with 14:46 remaining in the half. The Bulldogs later extended their lead to 16-10 at the 11:53 mark.

Bryan regained momentum and built a 35-29 lead with 2:05 left in the half. Union Commonwealth closed the period on a run to take a 40-39 lead into halftime.

Second Half – Union Commonwealth 77, Bryan 72

The second half featured multiple lead changes and ties. The score was even at 57-57 with 9:50 remaining, prompting a Bryan timeout. After a back-and-forth few minutes, the game was tied again at 67-67 following a Covington three-pointer with 4:21 to play.

Union Commonwealth outscored Bryan 10-5 over the final four minutes to secure the 77-72 victory. While the teams were evenly matched throughout the game, turnovers proved to be a key factor, as Union forced 16 Bryan turnovers while committing seven.
