BARBOURVILLE, Ky. — Union Commonwealth University's men's basketball team (2-3, 1-1 AAC) fell to Bryan (2-5, 1-1 AAC) on Monday night at Robsion Arena, 77-74.
Last season, the Bulldogs lost to Bryan 71-64. This time, they dropped another close contest despite leading for more than 39 minutes.
Senior forward Dallas Rufus led Union with a team-high 17 points, three assists, one rebound and one steal. Junior forward Devin Dunn followed with 13 points, three rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block. Sophomore guard Jabari Covington was the third Bulldog in double figures with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Junior center Ali Sakho pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds.
Game Recap
First Half: Union Commonwealth 40, Bryan 27
Union opened strong with a 7-0 run. Bryan answered with a 9-0 run to take the lead before the Bulldogs responded with an 8-0 run to go back in front 15-9. Union stretched the lead to 28-18 with 8:01 left in the half and pushed it to 35-22 with 4:42 remaining. The teams traded baskets down the stretch, and Union went into halftime up 40-27.
Second Half: Bryan 77, Union Commonwealth 74
Bryan outscored Union 50-34 after the break. The Bulldogs led by as many as 14 early in the half, but the Lions mounted a comeback beginning at the 7:35 mark. Bryan used a 14-4 run to cut the deficit to 70-68.
With 10 seconds left, Bryan took its second lead of the night at 75-74 on two free throws by Terrell Reeves. The Lions closed the game on a 9-2 run to secure the 77-74 win.
