BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College baseball team entered Saturday's doubleheader against Cincinnati Clermont with an undefeated record of 5-0.
The Bulldogs won today's opening game 4-1. The second matchup was declared a 7-7- tie after the seventh inning due to a lack of light.
In the opening matchup, Union led 2-1 after the first inning. The Bulldogs extended their lead in the bottom of the second inning when an RBI triple by Angel Mendoza allowed Luke Leddington to score.
Union tallied an additional run in the bottom of the fifth inning when a sacrifice fly by Logan Romasanta allowed Marcus Watson to score. The Bulldogs won 4-1 in seven innings.
The winning pitcher was Hunter Rossi, who registered 10 strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched. Union recorded nine hits in the matchup. Cincinnati Clermont tallied just three, and after a home run on the third at bat of the first inning, Union did not allow another run in the series' opening game.
In the second matchup of the day, the Bulldogs scored at least one run in each of the first three innings. Union led 5-1 going into the fourth inning. Each team scored one run in the fifth inning.
Cincinnati Clermont tallied five runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-6 lead. The side ended via a caught foul ball with the bases loaded.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Union tied the game when an RBI single by Nick Martinez allowed Jacob Jacquart to score. At the end of the inning, the game was ruled a tie since the matchup could not be continued due to a lack of light.
The Bulldogs are now 6-0-1, while Cincinnati Clermont is 0-1-1.
This series is scheduled to continue tomorrow with a doubleheader that is slated to begin at 12:00 p.m.
