Union Softball Drops Doubleheader Against No. 20 Cumberlands

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University softball team (11-29, 6-14 AAC) dropped its nonconference doubleheader to No. 20 Cumberlands (24-13, 5-4 MSC) Tuesday night at Union Field, falling 7-4 in Game One and 11-3 in Game Two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Cumberlands 7, Union Commonwealth 4

Cumberlands got on the board first in the opening inning, capitalizing on a Union error to take a 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless second inning, the Patriots added to their lead in the third with an RBI single, making it 2-0.

In the fourth inning, Cumberlands extended its advantage with an RBI double to left field, a double steal that brought in another run, and an RBI single up the middle to push the lead to 5-0.

Union responded in the bottom half of the inning when Taylor Kelly singled to score Skylar Smith. Kenley Vanbibber followed with a double that brought in Elizabeth Smith, Kinsley Redmon and Kelly, cutting the deficit to 5-4.

Following a scoreless fifth inning, the Patriots added insurance in the sixth with a two-run single to extend the lead to 7-4.

The Bulldogs put two runners on in the seventh but were unable to capitalize, falling 7-4.

Notable Performances

Game 2: Cumberlands 11, Union Commonwealth 3 (5 innings)

The Patriots got on the board early, scoring five runs in the first inning to take a 5-0 lead. An error and two singles each brought in a run, while a double plated two more.

Cumberlands extended its lead in the third inning, using a groundout and a Union error to score three runs and make it 8-0.

Union responded in the bottom of the inning when Lily Allen tripled to drive in Vanbibber and Savanna Higgins. Skylar Smith followed with an RBI single to score Allen, cutting the deficit to 8-3.

The Patriots added three more runs in the fourth inning and, after a scoreless fifth, secured the 11-3 run-rule victory.
