Union Softball Falls in Doubleheader Against Spartanburg Methodist

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University softball team (7-19, 2-8 AAC) dropped both games of its Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader against Spartanburg Methodist (18-5, 3-3 AAC) on Saturday afternoon at Union Field, falling 3-0 in game one and 6-2 in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Spartanburg Methodist 3, Union Commonwealth 0

Spartanburg Methodist struck first in the second inning when an error allowed a run to score, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

The Pioneers added to their lead in the fourth inning with an RBI single and later capitalized on another Union error to extend the advantage to 3-0.

Union was unable to generate offense throughout the contest and fell by the final score.

Game 2: Spartanburg Methodist 6, Union Commonwealth 2

Neither team scored through the first three innings before Spartanburg Methodist broke through in the fourth inning with four runs to take control.

Union responded in the fifth inning when Taylor Kelly lifted a sacrifice fly to score Elizabeth Smith. Later in the inning, Lily Allen tripled to bring home Tori Turner, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

The Pioneers added insurance in the seventh inning as a passed ball and an RBI double each brought in a run to extend the lead to 6-2.

Union was unable to rally in the bottom half of the inning.
