Union Softball Splits AAC Home Opener with Reinhardt

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University softball team (6-16, 1-5 AAC) split its conference home-opening doubleheader against Reinhardt (12-4, 8-2 AAC) Saturday afternoon at Union Field. The Bulldogs won game one 3-2 in nine innings before falling 6-2 in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Union Commonwealth 3, Reinhardt 2 (9 innings)

Neither team scored until the bottom of the third inning when Lily Allen singled to right field, bringing home Taylor Kelly and Kenley Vanbibber to give Union a 2-0 lead.

Reinhardt answered in the fifth inning with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Eagles struck again in the seventh inning when a groundout drove in the tying run to make it 2-2, sending the game into extra innings.

After a scoreless eighth inning, the Bulldogs broke through in the ninth. With runners on first and third, Ashleigh McLeskey delivered a walk-off single through the left side that scored Savanna Higgins and secured the 3-2 victory.

Game 2: Reinhardt 6, Union Commonwealth 2

Union struck first in game two when Savanna Higgins singled to bring home Lily Allen for a 1-0 lead.

Reinhardt responded in the third inning with an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.

Later in the inning, Union reclaimed the lead when a Reinhardt error allowed Allen to score, making it 2-1.

The Eagles answered again in the fourth inning with a home run to even the score at 2-2.

Reinhardt took its first lead of the game in the fifth inning when a Union error allowed a run to score. The Eagles added three more runs later in the inning to extend the lead to 6-2.

The Bulldogs were unable to respond in the remaining innings.
