Union Softball Falls to Cumberland in Both Doubleheader Games

LEBANON, Tenn. Union Commonwealth University softball (5-11) dropped both games of a doubleheader to Cumberland University (5-7) Thursday evening at Billy Dee Ross Stadium, 3-1 and 5-3.

Earlier this season, the Bulldogs split the home series against the Phoenix, falling 2-1 in game one before earning a 3-2 win in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Cumberland 3, Union Commonwealth 1

The Phoenix got on the board first in a bases-loaded situation. Union attempted to turn a double play, recording the out at second, but the batter reached first on an error. The runner from third scored on the play to give Cumberland a 1-0 lead.

Union responded in the third inning when Tori Turner singled to drive in Taylor Kelly from third to tie the game.

Cumberland regained the lead in the sixth inning as a single to the outfield brought in two runs, making it 3-1.

The Bulldogs were unable to capitalize on another scoring opportunity as the Phoenix secured the 3-1 victory.

Game 2: Cumberland 5, Union Commonwealth 3

Union jumped out to an early lead in the first inning with the bases loaded. Lily Allen singled to drive in the first run, Kinsley Redmon drew a walk to bring in another, and Elizabeth Smith added an RBI single to extend the Bulldogs' lead to 3-0.

Cumberland responded in the third inning on a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 3-1.

The Phoenix added another run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2. Later in the inning, a double drove in two runs to give Cumberland a 4-3 lead.

Cumberland added an insurance run in the sixth inning on an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-3.

Union was unable to generate additional offense as the Phoenix held on for the 5-3 win.

The Bulldogs return to the road Wednesday, March 11, traveling to CIU Softball Field in Columbia, S.C. to face Columbia International University. Game one is scheduled for 1 p.m., with game two set for 3 p.m.
