Union Softball Splits Series Against Cumberland

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. The Union Commonwealth University softball team (4-8) split its doubleheader against Cumberland University (3-5) Saturday evening at Union Field, falling 2-1 in game one before bouncing back for a 3-2 win in game two.

Game 1: Cumberland 2, Union Commonwealth 1

In the first two innings, the Bulldogs found themselves in scoring position twice but were unable to capitalize, failing to advance a runner from second in the first inning and being tagged out at home in the second.

Union threatened again in the third with a runner on second but could not bring her home.

In the fourth inning, the Bulldogs broke through. With a runner on second, Tori Turner delivered a single that scored Ryleigh Petrey to give Union a 1-0 lead. Lily Allen later reached base, and both runners advanced to second and third, but Union was unable to add to its advantage.

Cumberland responded in the sixth inning. With runners on second and third, the Phoenix used a single to left field to score both runs and take a 2-1 lead.

Union was unable to answer in the seventh.

Game 2: Union Commonwealth 3, Cumberland 2

Through the first two innings, neither team was able to score.

In the third inning, Union broke the deadlock. With the bases loaded, Maggie Haydu put the ball in play to shortstop, forcing an error that allowed Turner to score and gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. In the next at-bat, Ashleigh McLeskey singled to center field, driving in Savanna Higgins and Kenley Vanbibber to extend the lead to 3-0.

Union's defense held Cumberland scoreless over the next three innings.

In the seventh, the Phoenix put runners on second and third and used a two-out single to center field to score two runs and cut the deficit to 3-2. The Bulldogs secured the final out to clinch the win.
