Goff Picks Up First Wins as Union Softball Opens Season With Sweep

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. The Union Commonwealth University softball team (2-0) opened the regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Midway (0-2) on Sunday afternoon at Union Field, winning 11-3 and 9-1.

The victories marked head coach Kiley Goff's first career wins at the helm of the Bulldogs. Union starting pitchers Taylor Sain and Maggie Haydu each tossed complete games to secure the wins.

Game 1: Union Commonwealth 11, Midway 3 (6 innings)

Midway struck first in the top of the third inning when Molly Wooldridge doubled with the bases loaded, driving in two runs to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Union responded in the bottom of the inning as freshman Lily Allen tripled to bring home a run, igniting a three-run rally. The Bulldogs took a 3-2 lead heading into the fourth.

The Eagles briefly regained momentum in the top of the fourth. Autumn Wampler doubled to tie the game at 3-3 and later scored following a Union error.

Union answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman Emma Gochenour delivered a two-run double to put the Bulldogs back in front, 5-3.

The lead grew in the fifth as Savannah Higgins recorded an RBI flyout and Allen added an RBI single, extending the advantage to 7-3.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, Taylor Kelly sealed the game with a three-run triple, ending the contest via the mercy rule at 11-3.

Game 2: Union Commonwealth 9, Midway 1 (5 innings)

Union took control early in the second game. In the bottom of the second inning, Allen doubled and drove in three runs to spark a four-run inning for the Bulldogs.

Midway scored its lone run in the top of the fourth when Payton Baum homered to center field.

Union responded in the bottom of the inning after Victoria Rodriguez reached base on an Eagles error, bringing in a run and starting another four-run stretch.

The Bulldogs ended the game in the bottom of the fifth as Rodriguez singled and a Midway error allowed the final run to score, enforcing the mercy rule at 9-1.

The Bulldogs will open their first road trip of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 11, traveling to Pippa Passes, Ky., for a doubleheader against Alice Lloyd at Reeve Softball Field. First pitch for game one is set for 2 p.m., with game two scheduled for 4 p.m.
