Union outdoor track and field season preview and schedule release

Barbourville, Ky. - The Union Commonwealth University outdoor track and field team is set to launch its 2025 outdoor season this Friday at the Cumberlands Early Spring Meet in Williamsburg, Kentucky.

This spring, the Bulldogs will compete in eight meets, including the Cumberbands Ealry Spring Meet, Cumberland Multis, Landon Bond Classic, Centre Invitational, Gordon Bocock Invitational, Asbury Invitational, AAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and the season finale at the Jim Green Invitational at the University of Kentucky.

To preview the upcoming season, we caught up with head coach Chris Jelks for a Q&A.

How do you feel about transitioning from the indoor to the outdoor season?

You basically have about two to three weeks, and then it's go time again. The biggest factor at the start is the weather.

What are your expectations for this season?

With the outdoor season comes more events, including the heptathlon, decathlon, steeplechase, discus, and javelin. I believe both the men's and women's teams will climb higher in overall team scores.

Which returning players are you most excited about?

Erin Pease and Malene Obermayer will be a force in the women's multi-events. Keep an eye on Chandler Mills as he makes his return in racewalk. Garrome Hanna aims to break his own record in the javelin, while Preston Frost is eager to continue pursuing his goals in the 400 hurdles.

Who are the standout newcomers/transfers expected to make an impact?

Teddy Stills and Isaiah Spears will make headlines, as will Cedric Irwin and Andon Mashburn in the throws. On the women's side, Abby Mabe and Jasmine Clouse will make their outdoor debut for Union after transferring from Midway.

Throughout the season, an up-to-date version of the schedule can be found here.
