Union Baseball Falls to Pikeville in AAC Series Finale

Pikeville, Ky. – The Union Commonwealth University baseball team (3-6, 0-6 Appalachian Athletic Conference) dropped the final two games of its conference series at Pikeville (8-4, 4-2 AAC) on Saturday.

Game One: Pikeville 12, Union Commonwealth 2

  • Pikeville took an early lead in the bottom of the second inning, scoring three runs on an RBI single and two runs that crossed on the same wild pitch.

  • Union responded in the top of the third when Nathan McCabe delivered an RBI single to score Joaquin Gutierrez, cutting the deficit to 3-1. The Bears answered in the bottom half of the inning with another run to extend their lead to 4-1.

  • Pikeville added two more in the fifth on an RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-1. The Bears broke the game open in the sixth, plating four runs on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, a two-RBI double, and an RBI single to push the margin to 10-1.

  • Aiden Wilson provided the highlight for the Bulldogs in the seventh with a solo home run to trim the lead to 10-2. Pikeville closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single to secure the 12-2 victory.

Game Two: Pikeville 9, Union Commonwealth 5

  • Union struck first in the series finale as Noah Young lined an RBI single to center field in the top of the first to score Aiden Wilson.

  • The Bulldogs extended their lead to 2-0 in the second when Roberto Gallardo lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Isaiah Pintor. Pikeville answered in the bottom half of the inning with a two-RBI single to tie the game.

  • The Bears regained the lead in the fifth with an RBI double and an RBI single to go ahead 4-2. Pikeville added five more runs in the sixth on three singles and a sacrifice fly to stretch the advantage to 9-2.

  • Union mounted a late push in the seventh. Sheppard Graf drove in Wilson with an RBI single, Trey Hollon scored on a Pikeville error, and Nate Adkins crossed the plate on a passed ball. Despite the rally, the Bulldogs fell 9-5.
