Baseball falls hard at UPike

PIKEVILLE, Ky. - On a four-game winning streak and just days removed from an impressive weekend sweep against a top-15 team, momentum did not carry over into Tuesday for the Union baseball team.

Pikeville put the pressure on the Bulldogs immediately and was able to hand Union a run-rule loss, winning by the final of 15-1 in a seven-inning non-conference matchup.

After hitting five home runs in an 11-3 win over Bryan on Saturday, the Bulldogs' fortunes were turned on them as the Bears hit four homers in the first three innings, the highlight coming on a third-inning Kyle Williams grand slam.

A third-inning RBI single by Jackson Holcombe produced the only run of the day for the Bulldogs, who were out-hit 16-5.

Now 23-16-1, Union turns its attention to a critical weekend series at Point, a team a half-game ahead of the Bulldogs in the Appalachian Athletic Conference standings. The first of the three-game set will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday.
