CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - The Union College volleyball team used a 3-1 win over Urbana (Ohio) University Friday at the Campbellsville (Ky.) University Invitational to record the program's 300th win. The day started for Union with a 3-2 setback against Spalding (Ky.) University.

Union started the volleyball program in 1992 and currently has a 300-290 record over the 17 seasons. In 12 of the seasons, Union has won 15 or more matches including the 2008 squad's 15-6 record. The 100th win came in 1996 and the 200-win mark was reached in 2003.

The Lady Bulldogs took the opening set against Urbana 25-21. Urbana evened the match with a 25-17 second-set win. The Lady Bulldogs reeled off wins in the third and fourth sets, 27-25 and 25-20, for the victory. Union improved to 4-3 in four-set matches in 2008.

Monica Moreland (Louisville, Ky.) recorded 41 assists for her second 40-plus assist performance of the season.

Stephanie Pateman (Weyburn, Canada) led the team with 15 kills and Brooke Vinovich (Somerset, Ky.) added 13.

Autumn Combs (Florence, Ky.) and Marlee Cooper (Bloomington, Ill.) each contributed eight kills. Combs added eight total blocks.

Meg Donnelly (Middletown, Ohio) contributed 15 digs.

To start the day against Spalding, Union won the first set 25-21 only to see Spalding win the next with a 25-22 score. The third set went to Union, 25-23. Spalding, a NCAA Division III member, won the final two sets, 25-18 and 15-13, to clinch the match.

Moreland recorded her second straight double-double with 30 assists and 11 digs for Union.

Vinovich also posted a double-double with a team-high 14 kills and 13 digs.

Pateman also accounted for 13 kills. Combs had five kills and six blocks.

Donnelly led the team in the digs category and tied her season best with 17.

The invitational wraps up Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs play Indiana University Southeast at 10 a.m. followed by a noon match with Campbellsville.

Lady Bulldog Notes

  • Union is now 4-2 on neutral courts this season.
  • Friday's 3-2 loss is the first five-set defeat for Union in the season.
  • Vinovich and Moreland have combined for 15 double-doubles so far in 2008 which accounts for all on the squad.
  • Pateman's 15-kill effort is the second-best output from the senior this season, behind her 22-kill match with Montreat (N.C.) College.
