BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College men's soccer team knocked off No. 22 Bryan (Tenn.) College behind a 1-0 home victory in an Appalachian Athletic Conference match Wednesday. The win was Union's first over a nationally ranked team since 2002.

The win boosted Union's conference record to 3-2 with an overall record of 9-3-2. This is the first time the Bulldogs have won three or more conference matches since the 2001 campaign. The Bulldogs also remained undefeated at home with an 8-0-1 record on Burch/Nau Field.

Bryan fell for the first time in conference play moving to 4-1 in the AAC only hours after being selected as the a Top-25 team. Bryan's overall record went to 10-2-1.

The only score came in the 82nd minute when Liam Johnson (East Yorkshire, England) played a ball to Marc Pierre (Haiti) and he put it away for the game winning goal.

Jonathan Shaw (Merseyside, England) recorded his third shutout of the season with the help of seven saves.

"Shaw had a big game for us today along with the back four shutting down the top offensive team in the conference," Union head coach Tyler Brock said.

The conference shutout was the first for Union in 12 matches, dating back to a 2-0 decision over Bluefield (Va.) College in 2006. Since that shutout, Union has been outscored 13-28 in conference play. In AAC matches this year

Union's goal came 18 minutes after the Bulldogs gained a man advantage when Jacobo Gallardo received his second yellow card of the match. In all 12 cards were issued, eight to Bryan and four to Union.

Bryan took more shots than Union, with a 13-10 advantage and seven of Bryan's shots were on goal. In comparison, only three of the Bulldogs' shots were on goal. Bryan also attempted six corner kicks to Union's one.

"We didn't play our best, but we came together as a team," Brock added. "It showed that when we put our minds together that we can achieve anything."

Next on the Bulldogs' schedule is a homecoming contest with Cincinnati Christian University Friday. The match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.

Bulldog Notes

  • Union lost at Covenant (Ga.) College in the Bulldogs' last contest for the third loss of the season and once again the Bulldogs bounced back with a win following a defeat.
  • Pierre became the fourth Bulldog with 10 or more points this season, matching the 2007 squad's total.
  • Pierre's goal was also the 10th of his Union career.
  • Union is 4-1 this season in matches decided by one goal.
