LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Union College volleyball team won for the seventh straight time Friday evening, this time it was a 3-1 victory at Covenant (Ga.) College in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.
Union took the first two sets with scores of 25-18 and 25-21. Covenant captured the third set with a slim 25-23 margin before the Lady Bulldogs finished the match with a 25-16 fourth-set win.
The win boosted Union's record to 12-4 overall and 8-2 in conference play. Covenant slipped to 4-6 in the AAC and 7-10 overall.
The Union offense was led by Brooke Vinovich (Somerset, Ky.) with 14 kills. She also recorded a career-high 25 digs. Stephanie Pateman (Weyburn, Canada) recorded her eighth double-digit kill total of the season with 11 in the contest.
Senior Marlee Cooper (Bloomington, Ill.) added nine kills with eight blocks and both are season bests. Freshman Amelia Cantrell (Georgetown, Ky.) also posted eight blocks doubling her previous best. The duo helped Union to a season-best 18 kills as a team in the contest.
Monica Moreland (Louisville, Ky.) was credited with 38 assists and Christina Prindle (Florence, Ky.) provided 35 digs.
The Lady Bulldogs will travel to Bryan (Tenn.) College for a key AAC meeting Saturday. The match is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start. Bryan took the first meeting with a 3-1 score on Sept. 5 in Barbourville and Bryan currently holds a 7-1 conference mark.
In junior varsity action earlier in the evening, Union won 2-0 with scores of 25-16 and 25-19 in the sets.
Courtney Compton (Somerset, Ky.) and Lauren Wilson (Corbin, Ky.) accounted for 10 and six kills, respectively. Tara Gambrel (Middlesboro, Ky.) served three aces. Lesley Isaacs (McKee, Ky.) led the squad with 20 assists and Cailin Cornett (Annville, Ky.) recorded eight digs.
Lady Bulldog Notes
- Union swept Covenant 3-0 in the first meeting of the season on Sept. 6.
- The Lady Bulldogs have not lost to Covenant since 2004.
- Prindle surpassed the 200-dig mark on the season.
- Union's previous team-high for kills was 15 at Milligan on Sept. 25.
The current seven-match winning streak have all been conference victories.
