BECKLEY, W.Va. - A 0-0 tie is how the Union College men's soccer team started the 2008 season Wednesday in a road contest at West Virginia Tech that was played in Beckley, W.Va.

Union will take a 0-0-1 record into Saturday's home opener with Tennessee Temple University. The match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start. West Virginia Tech moved to 0-1-1 on the season.

As the score indicated, the match was evenly matched Union head coach Tyler Brock commented. Poor field conditions and rain during the match also played into the final score.

"Our players battled through adversity today," Brock added. "Even with all going on, the guys stayed composed."

Sophomore Jonathan Shaw (Merseyside, England) recorded his third career shutout for the Bulldogs.

Bulldog Notes

  • This is the first time a Union match has ended in a tie since September 8, 2007, a 2-2 tie with Tennessee Wesleyan College
  • Wednesday's tie is the 20th time Union has played to a draw in 17 seasons.
  • Union had eight shutouts in 2007.
  • In the 2007 meeting, Union defeated West Virginia Tech 3-2 in Barbourville.
