BECKLEY, W.Va. - The Union College women's soccer team posted four goals in a 20 minute span during the second half against West Virginia Tech to earn a 4-0 victory on the road Wednesday in the Lady Bulldogs' season opener.

Union head coach Jason Lanham earned his first collegiate coaching win in his debut Wednesday. The Lady Bulldogs enters Saturday's home opener against Tennessee Temple University with a 1-0 record meanwhile West Virginia Tech falls to 0-2.

Renata Peixoto (Brasilia, Brazil) started the Union scoring frenzy in the 53rd minute on a penalty kick.

Freshman Marcela Salum (Guatemala City, Guatemala) used a header for her first collegiate goal in the 70th minute. She played the ball off a corner kick from Peixoto. Salam also recorded two assists with the first coming in the 58th minute on a goal scored by Ashley Hall (Hazard, Ky.) The last Union goal was scored on a through ball from Salum to Heather Jaques (Manitoba, Canada) in the 73rd minute.

In goal for Union, junior Brittany Puryear (Somerset, Ky.) recorded a shutout behind four saves.

The Lady Bulldogs were able to attempt 16 shots to West Virginia Tech's four.

Saturday's match with Tennessee Temple is scheduled for a 2 p.m. kickoff.

Lady Bulldog Notes

  • Union had five shutouts in 2007 however the first came in the fourth match.
  • Puryear's shutout is the sixth of her career.
  • Hall scored her 10th career goal Wednesday.
