BARBOURVILLE, Ky. Gabby Berini of St. Augustine, Fla. has signed to play the 2009 volleyball season at Union College. Berini will play her senior season at Bartram Trail High School this fall.

Berini was an All-County Second Team selection. Entering her senior season, the 5-foot-4 libero has 780 digs. Bartram Trail compiled a 25-2 record this past season under the direction of head coach Allison Geiger. The team reached the regional quarterfinals and added a district championship. Bartram Trail also won the Episcopal Tournament Championship.

"Gabby is an athlete with good ball control and energy," Union head coach Whitney Erb said. "She has a great work ethic and will help our defense improve."

She has been a member of the Jacksonville Juniors Volleyball Academy 17 National Team along with fellow 2009 signee Chelsea Kirschman. Berini will graduate from Bartram Trail in December and enroll at Union for the spring semester.

"I'm excited about both of these players (Berini and Kirschman) and feel that they will be great assists to our team both on and off the court." Erb added.

Union enters the 2008 season looking to defend the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season championship. The Lady Bulldogs compiled a 34-15 record with a 16-2 conference mark. The 2008 slate opens for Union at the Anderson University Tournament in Anderson, S.C. Action starts on Friday, August 29. The home schedule starts with a contest against University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) on Tuesday, September 2.
