BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - In the postseason edition, national champion Union College remains atop the rankings as the No. 1 team in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Wednesday.
The Bulldogs received all 11 first-place votes and garnered 281 total voting points to remain No. 1 for the third consecutive poll.
Union (35-3 overall) closed out the season by winning 33 consecutive games en route to the national championship. Along the way, Union posted a perfect 20-0 record in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) during the regular season and won the AAC Tournament with an average margin of victory of 21 points.
Statistically, the Bulldogs ranked in the top 10 nationally in 13 categories and led NAIA Division II in total steals (387), total points scored (3,414) and total rebounds (1,626). Union ranks high statistically in these categories as well:
- Second in steals per game (10.184),
- Third in scoring margin (17.684),
- Fourth in total blocks (160),
- Fifth in total assists (622),
- Sixth in rebound margin (8.421),
- And eighth in rebounds per game (42.789).
The Bulldogs were led by their three NAIA All-Americans: first teamers Gerrard Newby and Paul Stone, and honorable mention Tyrone Sherman. Newby led the team in scoring (20.4 points per game), rebounding (9.7 rebounds per game) and blocks (50), while Sherman led the way in assists (225) and steals (78) to go along with his 13.8 points-per game average. Stone shined in his own right, averaging 18.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
Sherman ranked second in NAIA Division II in total steals and fourth in total assists, while Newby ranked fifth in total rebounds (368), sixth in total points (775), and eighth in total steals (68). Stone checked in at No. 15 in both total points (684) and rebounds (298).
