BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College men's head soccer coach Tyler Brock has announced the Bulldogs' 2014 schedule. In all, the team will play 18 matches on the year, with nine of which at home.
Headlining the slate, however, will be a home out-of-conference match with defending NAIA National Champion Martin Methodist (Tenn.), tentatively set to be played at 3 p.m. on Sept. 23. The Bulldogs will also travel to perennial power Rio Grande (Ohio) on Oct. 15, and host Maine-Fort Kent in the team's annual homecoming match on Oct. 18 to round out a challenging out-of-conference slate.
"I am excited about our schedule for this upcoming season," said Brock. "Once again, we have pushed the conference games to the back side of the schedule so we have time to play some matches and get accustomed to our system and our new teammates.
"I think we have potential with this schedule to play against a lot of good teams and even get some more respect on the national level if we can show up and play to a standard that we want achieve."
Things get underway for the Bulldogs on Aug. 29 and 30, when the program hosts the second annual Thomas Trammell Memorial Classic at Burch/Nau Field. Union will entertain Crown (Tenn.) on the 29th, then conclude the classic with a match against Hiwassee (Tenn.) on the 30th.
Following three straight out-of-conference road games at Asbury (Ky.) (Sept. 3), Brescia (Ky.) (Sept. 6), and rival Cumberlands (Ky.) (Sept. 10), the Bulldogs return home on Sept. 16 and host Georgetown (Ky.) at Burch/Nau Field. Appalachian Athletic Conference play then begins for Union on the road on Sept. 20, as they travel to Montreat (N.C.) for their conference opener.
After the Martin Methodist match on Sept. 23, the Bulldogs leap into AAC action, playing five straight matches against conference foes. Union will host Tennessee Wesleyan on Sept. 27, Bluefield (Va.) on Oct. 1, and Bryan (Tenn.) on Oct. 11. The team will travel to Truett-McConnell (Oct. 4) and Reinhardt (Ga.) (Oct. 8) during this portion of the schedule, as well.
Following the Rio Grande and Maine-Fort Kent matches, the Bulldogs wrap up AAC play for the season, traveling to Milligan (Tenn.) (Oct. 22) and St. Andrews (N.C.) (Oct. 29), before concluding the regular season on Nov. 1 at home against Point (Ga.).
The 2014 AAC Tournament begins at Nov. 8 at sites around the conference.
