BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College softball team fell in a pair of contests with Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Bryan (Tenn.) on Wednesday at Union Field, losing game one, 6-3, in nine innings, then game two, 5-3.

With the losses, Union fell to 16-18 overall, 2-10 in the AAC, while Bryan improved to 5-1 in the AAC 16-15 overall with the DH sweep.

The pair of games was the Bulldog softball programs annual Think Pink contests for Breast Cancer Awareness. Union bowling coach Chelsea Gilliam (a Breast Cancer survivor) and president Dr. Marcia Hawkins threw out ceremonial first pitches before each game of the double-dip, as well.

Game One

In the first game, both teams got off to a slow start, with Bryan holding a slim 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the fourth inning. There, the Bulldogs struck, scoring 3 runs to take a 3-1 lead into the fifth.

During the frame, Union made a two-out rally, posting three straight RBI hits to take the two-run lead. First, Brianna Degennaro (JR/Shalimar, Fla. ) smacked an RBI double scoring Chandler Overton (FR/Nashville, Tenn.) from second, then Danielle Borum (SO/Kingston, Tenn. ) knocked home Degennaro on an RBI triple, giving Union the lead.

The final RBI hit was by Andrea Foster (SO/Harriman, Tenn.), who had an RBI single, scoring Borum to give the Bulldogs the 3-1 lead. That lead, however, was short lived, as Bryan quickly tied the game back up at 3-3 in the top of the fifth.

After both teams went down quietly in both the sixth and seventh innings, the game entered extras played under international tie-breaker rules. Despite that, Bryan and Union were still unable to score in the eighth, as the game went into the ninth.

There, Bryan grabbed control, scoring three runs. In the bottom of the frame, the Bulldogs left two runners stranded, as the Lions walked away with a three-run victory.

In the pitching circle, Union's Rachel Cogdill (SR/Knoxville, Tenn.) (6-9) took the loss despite pitching a strong game, striking out eight in a full nine innings of work.

Game Two

The second game had a similar look as game one, with the first run of the ballgame once again not tallied until the third inning. Unlike the first game, Union cracked the scoreless tie in the third on an Ashley Wojnowski (JR/Sevierville, Tenn.) RBI double that scored Cogdill, giving the Bulldogs the early 1-0 edge.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Bulldogs increased the lead to 3-0, plating a pair of runs, as Borum and Degennaro scored on Bryan errors. However, the Lions finally got to starting pitcher Katie Perkins (SR/Owensboro, Ky. ) in the fifth and sixth, scoring a run in each frame to make it a 3-2 game entering the seventh.

In the final frame, Bryan took control, scoring three runs to go up by two. Union went down in order in the bottom of the inning, as the Lions walked away with an AAC sweep in come-from-behind fashion.

Overall in game two, Wojnowski led Union at the dish, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. In the circle, Perkins (4-4) was the hard luck loser for the Bulldogs.

Up Next

The Bulldogs will look to get back on track on Saturday, as they host Columbia (S.C.) in another AAC DH at Union Field. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12 noon.
