BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Derek Shardine, a midfielder from Fairfield High School, has signed to play soccer with the Bulldogs of Union College.

Shardine was a member of the All-Greater Miami Conference team his senior year. He also played with the ASC Crew and West Side Rage club teams.

He will join former high school teammate Aaron Miller who completed his freshman season with the Bulldogs in the fall.

“Derek has a lot of potential and while he plays in the midfield, I could also see him playing at an outside back role for us as well,” commented Union head coach Tyler Brock. “I think he has the ability to play in different spots for us next year and I am excited to see what he is going to bring with him when he gets here in August.”

Shardine will have a chance to break into the Bulldogs’ starting line up early as Union graduated six midfielders.

“He has a good touch on the ball and good vision so I think he can come in and compete next year if he comes in shape and ready to play,” Brock added.

Union finished 2007 with a 10-7-1 record, the most wins since 2001. The Bulldogs also picked up an Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal win.
