BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Junior Ashley Wojnowski ended a huge day by scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two, lifting the Union College softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Indiana Wesleyan with a 7-6 victory in game two. The Bulldogs pounded the Wildcats in game one of the double-dip, 13-7, on Saturday at Union Field.

With the victories, Union extended their winning streak to four games, improving to 6-4 on the year. Indiana Wesleyan fell to 2-2 on the year with the results.

Game Two

After scoring in double-figures in game one, the Union offense stalled in the first two and a half innings of game two, as the Bulldogs fell behind IWU 4-0 entering the bottom of the third.

There, Union got back in it with a three-run frame to cut the Wildcat lead down to 4-3. Wojnowski had the big hit of the inning, knocking in two RBI on a bases clearing triple (her third of the day), while Danielle Borum bunted home Amanda Cupp on a RBI infield single.

After a scoreless fourth, Union tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, as Wojnowski recorded another RBI on a ground out, scoring Chandler Overton from third base. IWU, however, took the lead back in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs to go up 6-4 entering the bottom of the inning.

In the sixth, Union clawed their way back in it with a two-out rally. With Borum on third,  Erin Cooper smacked an RBI double into deep center field, making it a 6-5 game. Next up was Andrea Foster, who tied the game at 6-6 with another RBI double to center, scoring pinch runner Brianna Degennaro.

After IWU went down in order in the top of the seventh, Union had a chance to win it in the bottom of the frame. After an out, Wojnowski continued her dominating day by hitting a double off the center field fence. Next up was Cupp, who hit a single, giving the Bulldogs runners on the corners.

But, the next batter hit an infield pop fly that was caught, recording the second out. Union's last chance rested on the bat of Jamie Cyrus, who roped a pitch toward second base. The ball was misplayed by the IWU second baseman and went into the outfield, as Wojnowski easily scored from third on the error to give the Bulldogs another walk-off win (their third of the 2014 season).

Overall, Wojnowski was 2-of-4 with three RBI, a triple and a run scored in game two to lead the way. Borum was also 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, while Overton was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. In the circle, Megan Baldwin (4-2) was the victor, tossing five innings in relief, allowing just two runs on six hits.

Game One

In a wild game one, Union blew out Indiana Wesleyan after posting two huge innings on the offensive end.

Things, however, started off badly for the Bulldogs, as they allowed four runs in the top of the first inning, making four errors in the process. In the bottom half of the inning, Union made up for their mistakes, plating seven runs to go up 7-4 after an inning.

With Union ahead 8-6 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bulldogs put the Wildcats away with a five run frame, taking an insurmountable 13-6 lead in the process. IWU scored the games last run in the top of the seventh on a home run, as Union rolled to a big six-run win in game one, smacking 14 hits in the victory.

Overall, Wojnowski started off her day in historic fashion, hitting two triples in the top of the first to tie the school record for triples in a game in her first two at-bats. She ended the game with two and a run scored, as well.

Elsewhere, Cyrus hit her first home run of the season in the first (a two-run shot), ending the game going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Tiffanie Moore was 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Borum went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.

In the circle, Baldwin (3-2) earned her first win of the day in another successful relief effort, allowing just one run on four hits in four innings of work.
