BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Junior Jamie Cyrus hit a walk-off RBI single in extra innings, lifting the Union College softball team to clinch a doubleheader sweep with a 6-5, game two victory in eight innings over Tennessee Temple on Thursday at Union Field. The Bulldogs were victorious in the first game of the double dip, 11-6.
With the victories, Union snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 4-4 overall on the year. Tennessee Temple fell to 0-4 with the losses.
Following a blowout victory in game one, Union dug themselves a big hole in the second game, falling behind 5-0 in the top of the third, as TTU knocked Bulldog starter Katie Perkins out of the ballgame.
After not doing much offensively in through four innings, the Bulldogs finally got on the board in the fifth, as an Ashley Wojnowski RBI single cut the Bulldogs deficit to four runs at 5-1. In the sixth, Union jumped right back in it, scoring three runs to cut the TTU lead down to 5-4.
In the seventh, Tennessee Temple went down quietly in the top of the frame, as Union faced their last chance to tie the game. The Bulldogs came through, as Danielle Borum knocked in leadoff hitter Wojnowski from third base on an RBI single, tying the game at 5-5. Union, however, stranded Borum on second base in the frame, thus sending the game to extras.
After Tennessee Temple stranded a runner on second in the top of the eighth, Union had a chance to win in the bottom of the inning. With international tie-breaker rules in effect and pinch runner Brianna Degennaro placed on second base, Cyrus won the game with a flare to left-center field, easily scoring Degennaro and winning the game for Union.
Overall, Cyrus had a huge game two, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Wojnowski went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. In the pitching circle, Megan Baldwin (2-2) tossed five and two-third innings of shutout relief to earn the win, allowing four hits, while striking out three.
In the first game, the Bulldogs blew open a close ballgame with a six-run fifth inning, on their way to coasting to a five run victory over the visiting Crusaders.
After TTU took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, Union took the lead back in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs. After each team scored a run in the fourth, Union remained in the lead, 4-3, entering the fifth.
There, the Bulldogs blew the game open with their six-run frame to go up 10-3. The big play of the inning came when Tiffanie Moore hit a single to left field with the bases loaded, scoring two. However, TTU made an error fielding the ball, scoring the runner from first and Moore on a three-base error.
Despite scoring three runs in the top of the sixth, the six run deficit was too much for TTU to comeback from, as the Bulldogs rolled to the victory.
Overall, Moore led the Bulldogs at the dish in game one, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Borum was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored. In the circle, Rachel Cogdill (2-2) earned the win, striking out eight batters in six innings of work.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, hosting Indiana Wesleyan at Union Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon.
