BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Guard Michael Bueter scored a team-high 14 points, as the Union College men's basketball team outlasted St. Andrews (N.C.), 52-49, in Appalachian Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Robsion Arena.

With the victory, Union moved to 11-3 on the year, 6-1 in the AAC. St. Andrews fell to 2-8 overall, 1-6 in the AAC with the loss.

In the first half, Union - who was playing their first game in three weeks - got off to a fast start, opening up a quick 8-0 lead in the first three minutes. The Bulldogs proceeded to extend the lead out to 12 points (14-2) with 12:27 left after a Deante Johnson free throw.

After opening up a 13-point lead (19-6) with 8:54 left after a Bueter jumper, SAU began to chip away, knocking the Bulldog lead down to two points (24-22) with 2:28 remaining. Union, however, went into the half on a roll, ending the period on a 7-2 run to go up 31-24 at the break.

In the second half, SAU slowed the pace of play down and took advantage, taking their first lead of the afternoon with 10:04 left at 41-39. The game remained close through the next five minutes, with SAU taking a 47-45 lead with 5:33 left.

This would be the final time the Knights would hold the lead the rest of the day, as Bueter sunk a three-pointer with 5:04 left to give Union the one-point lead (48-47). Over the final five minutes, defense ruled the game, as both teams could not capitalize on scoring chances.

Things came to a head with 13 seconds left with St. Andrews down by three points (52-49). On the possession, the Knights' Jamal Watson attempted a three-pointer that would've tied the game up. However, Union's Fitzgerald White was able to partially block the shot to give the Bulldogs possession and the close conference victory.

Overall, Bueter led the Bulldogs in the win, shooting 4-of-6 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the free throw line in his 14-point performance. Union's only other double-digit scorer on the night was Johnson, who ended with 11 points.

By the Numbers

  • Bueter scored in double-figures for the eighth time on the 2013-14 season in the victory. Meanwhile, Johnson posted his 11th double-digit scoring day of the season in the win.
  • Despite earning the hard-fought win, Union's 52 point total was their lowest of the season and lowest since a 76-48 loss at Montreat (N.C.) last season.
  • However, the 49 points allowed by the Bulldogs was the lowest under head coach Kevin Burton and the lowest since a 67-35 win at Covenant (Ga.) on Feb. 13, 2010.
