BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College men's and women's swimming teams sit in second place overall after the first evening of the 2013 UC Winter Invitational. The event is being held at the Stivers Aquatic Center.
For the men, Union collected 129 points on the first day of competition. The Bulldogs trail Asbury (Ky.) in the overall race, who garnered 150 points on the first day of competition. Meanwhile, the Union women picked up 102 points, and only trail Emory and Henry (Va.) (who collected 151 points on day one).
Of note on the first day of competition for the men's team, Jose Jesus Morales won two events, capturing the 200-IM (1:55.12) and 200-fly (1:55.10). Morales' times in both events broke school records and were a pair of NAIA "A" Qualifying cuts.
Elsewhere, Bradley Moore captured the 500-free (4:39.44, an "A" cut), Vinicius Rossi took first in the 100-breast (58.24, also an "A" cut), and Lucas Lucena took the top spot in the 200-back (1:59.98, an "A" cut). The lone relay contested on the first day was the 800-free relay and Union placed second in a time of 7:08.27 (an "A" cut).
For the women's team, Callie Harrigan won the 200-back (2:07.56), smashing a school-record in the event, while earning an "A" cut. In the 800-free relay, the Bulldogs also placed second, hitting the wall in 7:56.62 (an "A" cut).
The Union College Winter Invitational concludes tomorrow at the Stivers Aquatic Center, with finals beginning at 5 p.m.
