SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Union senior Caity Merritt is one of the 391 volleyball student-athletes have been named 2013 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes, the national office announced Friday at the NAIA Volleyball National Championship Tournament.

This is the second year in a row the Abingdon, Va., native received the award as Merritt is also one of only two players in program history to earn this honor.

In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach or sports information director for the distinction, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status.

Merritt finished the season with 430 kills and a .236 hitting percentage. She also has 108 digs and 48 total blocks to her credit. Merritt ranks 50thin the NAIA in total kills. She wrapped up her career with 941 kills, a .230 hitting percentage, 200 total blocks and 199 digs.

This season, Merritt was named to the All-Appalachian Athletic Conference first team and was named the AAC Player and Hitter of the Week once.

Union finished the season 26-9 overall and 17-3 in conference play.
