BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College men's swimming coach Rafael Forti has announced that Diego Rios has signed his National Letter of Intent, and plans on joining the Bulldog program in time for the start of the 2014 Spring Semester.

Rios, a native of Tulancingo, Mexico, plans to swim freestyle events for Union when he joins the team in January.

"I am happy to be able to bring Diego on board for the spring semester of our 2013-14 season," said Forti. "He will provide us much needed depth to our sprint freestyle events and team relay events. We are expecting him to make a positive impact right away in our team line up, given his swimming background and experience. He will be an asset."

In Mexico, Rios prepped at Preparatoria No.2, breaking state records in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Diego is the son of Armando Rios and Alicia Munoz, and plans to major in Math and Chemistry at Union College.

The Bulldogs open their 2013-14 season on Saturday evening, hosting Cumberlands (Ky.) and St. Catharine (Ky.) at the Stivers Aquatic Center. Action gets underway at 6 p.m.
