BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Montreat (N.C.) scored two goals late in the second half to pull away from the Union College women's soccer team, 2-0, in Appalachian Athletic Conference play at Burch/Nau Field on Wednesday afternoon.

With the loss, Union fell to 2-8 overall on the year, 2-4 in the AAC, while Montreat improved to 9-4, 7-1 in the AAC with the victory.

In the first half, Montreat controlled the pace of play, keeping the ball on their own end for the majority of the first 45 minutes. In fact, the Lady Cavaliers outshot the Bulldogs by a wide 14-1 margin in the period. However, the Union defense held, as goalie Kendall Ellington made five saves to keep Montreat off the scoreboard.

In the second half, Montreat continued to dominate play early on, but could not convert on the chances they had. Union's best chance to score came in the 61st minute, as Helen Weber fired a shot off a great cross toward the net. The shot, however, sailed high, and the match remained scoreless.

Montreat finally cracked the scoreless tie in the 77th minute, as Lauren Cantin scored off an Evan Cain cross to give the Lady Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. Montreat then scored the go-ahead goal with under three minutes left, as Hannah Madsen headed in a goal off a deflection to give the Lady Cavaliers the two-score lead and win.

Overall, Montreat outshot Union in the match 24-4, and held a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
