BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Truett-McConnell's (Ga.) Lukas Storey scored the eventual game-winner in the 85th minute, lifting the Bears to a 3-2 victory over the Union College men's soccer team in Appalachian Athletic Conference action on Tuesday at Burch/Nau Field.
With the loss, Union fell to 2-2-1, 0-1 in the AAC, while Truett-McConnell improved to 2-1, 1-0 in the AAC with the victory.
In the first half, the Bulldogs got off to a great start, scoring a goal in the opening seconds of play. Thirteen seconds in, Joe Butcher played a cross from Andre Scott at the 15 yard line, and knocked home a goal, giving Union the early 1-0 lead.
The Bears, however, came back, scoring the next two goals of the contest to take a 2-1 lead into intermission.
In the second half, Union tied things up in the 50th minute, as Jonathan Watson scored off a deflected save in the box to make the score 2-2. It remained that way until the 85th minute, when after a wild scramble in front of the net off a corner kick, Storey scored the game-winner.
Union had one last chance in the last minute, nearly playing a free kick in the box into a goal. But, TMC turned away the Bulldogs once again, clinching the conference win for the road side.
Overall, Union outshot Truett-McConnell 15-8 in the contest, and held a 4-2 edge on corner kicks.
By the Numbers
- Butcher's goal seconds into the match was the first of the season for the senior, and the third goal of his career. Scott, a freshman, picked up his first career assist on the goal.
- Watson scored his third goal of the season in the contest, and has now scored a goal in three of the five matches the Bulldogs have played on the year. The goal was also the 24th of Watson's three year career at Union.
- Truett-McConnell played in their first AAC match against the Bulldogs. The Bears joined the league officially earlier this summer.
Union looks to bounce back on Saturday, hosting Reinhardt (Ga.) at home. Things get underway in the AAC tilt at 4 p.m.
