ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Union College forward Alex Smith was named the Appalachian Athletic Conference's Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 8, the league announced Monday. 

Smith, a freshman, has been an electric addition to the Bulldog line-up on the young season. In all, the Montego Bay, Jamaica native has scored goals in three of the four matches Union has played in, finding the back of the net on shots five times.

His best game to date came last Wednesday against Brescia (Ky.), as he recorded his first career hat trick, pacing Union to a commanding 6-0 victory. All three of Smith's goal's came in the first half of play, helping Union leap out to a 5-0 lead at the break. Against Cumberland (Tenn.) on Saturday, Smith scored his fourth goal on the week early in the first half, helping Union win a thriller in overtime, 3-2. 

Smith, and the rest of the Bulldogs (2-1-1 on the year) will be back in action tomorrow, as they open AAC play against Truett-McConnell (Ga.) at Burch/Nau Field. Things get underway at 3 p.m.
