BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College freshman forward Alex Smith scored three goals in the first half, pacing the Bulldogs to a commanding 6-0 victory over Brescia in NAIA action on Wednesday afternoon at Burch/Nau Field.

With the win, Union moved to 1-1-1 on the year, while Brescia fell to 0-2-0 with the loss.

In the first 45 minutes, the Bulldogs scored early and often on their way to rolling into halftime up 5-0.

Smith's first goal came in the 15th minute after he played a great ball from Callum Tychowski in the box, making it 1-0 Bulldogs. Tychowski's assist was the first of his career at Union.

Union went up 2-0 after another freshman, Josh Reed, scored his first collegiate goal from three yards out in the 21st minute. Reed played a pass from Thales Galan into the net, the first assist of the season for the junior.

Smith completed his hat trick scoring Union's next two goals, unassisted. First in the 28th minute, Smith fired a shot from 10 yards out off a deflected free kick into the back of the net. Then in the 32nd minute, he sped past the Brescia defense, eventually scoring on a shot from 20 yards away to make it 4-0, Union.

The final goal of the half was scored by another freshman, Jason Jacobs, who added Union's fifth goal of the day unassisted in the 41st minute. The final goal of the afternoon was notched by senior Jonathan Watson, who scored his second goal of the year off a Reed cross (his first career assist) in the 58th minute of action.

Overall, Union out shot Brescia by a wide 25-9 margin, and held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks. In net, goalkeeper CJ Hopkins earned his first career shutout, making two saves in 90 minutes of action.

By the Numbers

  • Smith has been fantastic for the Bulldogs early in the season. Overall, the Montego Bay, Jamaica native has scored four goals in the first three games of his collegiate career to record a 12 point total.
  • In all, Union freshman were responsible for five of the six goals scored on the day.
  • Watson's score in the second half was the 23rd of his career, bumping his career point total to an even 50.
  • The shutout was the first for the Bulldogs since Aug. 31, 2012 when Union bested Ohio Christian, 3-0 in the Georgetown Classic.
