BARBOURVILLE, Ky.  – The Union College men's soccer team fought No. 8 Southern Polytechnic for 90 minutes on a hot day at Burch/Nau Field, earning a 1-1 draw over the top ten squad on Saturday. The match was a part of the 2013 Thomas Trammell Memorial Classic.

With the result, Union moved to 0-1-1, while Southern Poly went to 3-1-1.

"Very proud of the boys today with their effort," said head coach Tyler Brock. "I thought we played well enough to win, but I'll take the result. We had big games from Dino Sefer and Jordan Johnson. They both really helped us during the match.

"A lot of our younger players stepped up today and learned how to play in a college game at a high level. If we play with that kind of intensity all year, we can meet all our goals."

In the first half, both teams failed to convert on several scoring opportunities, as the match went into the 40th minute scoreless.

In the 42nd minute, Southern Poly scored what turned out to be their only goal of the afternoon, as Omar Kaneth scored from 10 yards out, knocking a ball into the net off the back of his heel.

In the second half, Union came out and was the aggressor all half, controlling action.

Union finally cashed in the 63rd minute after a penalty was called in the box on SPSU. The Bulldogs called on Jonathan Watson to convert a penalty kick, which he did, knotting the match up at one.

Over the final 20 minutes of the match, Union had several chances to score the game-winner, only to come up short. In the final minute, the Bulldogs had a cross hit the crossbar and almost bounce into the net, and had a corner kick with 10 seconds left. However, the Bulldogs could not convert, and the match ended in a draw.

Overall, Union and Southern Poly took 11 shots, apiece, while SPSU held a 3-2 advantage on corner kicks. In goal, CJ Hopkins, making his first collegiate start at the position, made six saves.

The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, hosting Brescia (Ky.) at Burch/Nau Field. Action gets underway at 5 p.m.
