BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College men's swimming coach Rafael Forti has announced that Lucas Lucena, a native of Joinville, SC, Brazil, has signed his National Letter of Intent to join the Bulldog program for the 2013-14 season.

Lucena will look to swim backstroke and sprint freestyle events for the Bulldogs.

"I am glad Lucas has decided to continue his career at Union College," said Forti. "He has a good swimming background, with many years of experience, both nationally and internationally, and I am sure he will help us being stronger right away. I am looking forward to start working with him in the fall."

"My expectations are to help the team in every way I can, achieve all the team goals and try to exceed my coaches' expectations," added Lucena.

Despite being from Brazil, Lucena prepped here in the States at Fremont High School in Fremont, Mich. There, he was a MHSSA state qualifier in the 100-back, finished first in the 200-IM at the Coastal Conference Championships, and placed second in the 100-back at the same event.

In his native Brazil, Lucena finished first in the 200-back at a State Championship meet, while finishing third in the 50-back at the meet. He also clubbed with the Joinville Tênis Clube in his native country.

Lucena, the son of Joao de Deus and Sabine Restle Lucena, plans to major in computer information technology at Union College.
