BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Chelsea Gilliam has been named the Union head men's and women's bowling coach, Director of Athletics Tim Curry recently announced.

Gilliam spent the 2012-13 season as the interim coach for the Bulldog and Lady Bulldog programs. She came to Union to be the assistant coach.

"We are glad to have Chelsea join our staff on a full-time basis," said Curry. "During the past year, she really stepped up and showed what she was capable of, and we look forward to seeing how she grows the Union bowling programs in the coming years."

Gilliam said of the appointment, "I really excited about this and am looking forward to getting settled in. Now, that I'm going to be here, I can get a better plan of how I want to run things."

Spending the past season as the interim coach, Gilliam said it was a great learning experience.

"(At the beginning of the year) I was kind of quiet, but I learned that in some situations if I don't speak up, chaos can erupt," she said.

"It was a little crazy," Gilliam said of her interim year. "I thought I would have a year or two to learn how to coach, but I had to learn quickly. While I learned a lot, I know I still have more to learn."

It was a rocky season for the Bulldog and Lady Bulldog squads. But as the season progressed, the team's play continued to improve, and Gilliam foresees the team remain this path.

"We have a lot of kids coming back, and with another year together, the team will hopefully get better and we can start winning tournaments," Gilliam said.

The 2013-14 season will get underway in the fall.
