ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Union College forward Deante Johnson has been named the Appalachian Athletic Conference's Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced today.
Johnson, a sophomore, led the Bulldogs to two huge wins over AAC-foes Point (Ga.) and Bryan (Tenn.) this past week, as the Bulldogs extended their winning streak to five games.
First, in an 82-75 victory over Point in double overtime on Wednesday, Johnson notched a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. However, Johnson made arguably the two biggest shots of the game, making the game-tying lay-up at the end of regulation to tie things up at 62-all, and then breaking the final tie of the game in the second overtime with another made jumper.
He followed up that performance with a 21 point, 11 rebound performance in the 78-58 regular season finale win over Bryan on Saturday. The double-double was Johnson's seventh of the season, as the forward has only seen action in nine games total on the 2012-13 season. He has averaged 18.3 point per contest in those games, and 10.2 rebounds a contest, as well.
Union ended the regular season with a 15-13 overall mark, 8-8 in the AAC, and will enter this week's AAC Tournament in Kingsport, Tenn. as the sixth-seed. The Bulldogs will play third seed Bryan for the second time in five days on Thursday, with tip-off scheduled for 9:15 p.m.
