BRISTOL, Va. - Virginia Intermont's Dalec Cromwell led all scorers with 22 points, pacing the Cobras to a 93-81 victory over the Union College men's basketball team in Appalachian Athletic Conference action on Tuesday evening.
With the loss, Union fell to 8-8 overall on the year, 2-3 in the AAC, while VI improved to 9-7 with the victory, 3-1 in the AAC.
At halftime, Virginia Intermont held a 38-35 lead over the Bulldogs, in a first half that saw the Cobras open up a 12-point lead of 31-19 with five minutes to go in the period. Union, however, ended the half strong, going on a 14-3 run capped off by a Tyler Wagner jumper that went in at the buzzer.
To start the second half, the Bulldogs got the lead cut back down to three points (46-43) at the 16-minute mark on a Matthew Thomas jumper, but VI proceeded to go on a 13-3 run over the next few minutes to extend the lead out to double digits at 59-48 at the 13-minute mark.
From there, the Bulldogs could not get much closer to the Cobra lead, as the closest they came to it the rest of the night was at seven points (61-54 with 11:06 left). In the second half, the Cobras outscored the Bulldogs by nine (55-46) on their way to a double-digit home AAC win.
Overall, Union was led on the night by Deante Johnson, who scored 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor. Johnson, who has now scored at least 20 points in the last three games, also pulled down seven rebounds on the night.
Three other Bulldogs scored in double digits on the night, as Thomas had 19 points (a season high), and James Strange came off the bench to score 16 points (also a season high). Josh Smith rounded out the double-digit scorers on the night for UC, scoring 14 points.
VI was led by Cromwell, who led five double-digit Cobra scorers with his 22 point night (on 9-of-12 shooting).
The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday, returning home to Robsion Arena to host Milligan (Tenn.) in another AAC match-up. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
