BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Union College men's and women's swimming team opened the 2012-13 portion of their home schedule on Saturday, hosting a meet against Bethel (Tenn.) and Asbury (Ky.) at Stivers Aquatic Center.

For the men, the Bulldogs got past Bethel 205-11 and Asbury 137-125, while on the women's side, the Lady Bulldogs beat Bethel 108-44, but  fell to Asbury 166-70. In all, UC swimmers hit 28 NAIA National Qualifying Marks on the afternoon.

"It was a great day to be a swim fan in attendance at the Stivers Center," said head coach Rafael Forti. "We had great battles in the pool during the entire meet. It was a very fast meet, and it was very exciting to see of how hard our swimmers competed today."

On the men's side, the Bulldogs got thing going quickly, posting two "A" qualifying marks in the 200-medley relay. Union's "A" team hit the wall in 1:36.69, while the "B" team finished in 1:46.56. The Bulldogs also hit an "A" cut in the 400-free relay in 3:17.89.

Individually, several Bulldog swimmers posted multiple National Qualifying cuts. First, Yan Rocha posted three on the afternoon, with an "A' cut in the 200-free (1:46.98), a "B" cut in the 50-free (22.69), and a "B" cut in the 100-free portion of the 400-free relay. Joining Rocha with three cuts was Travis Strachan, who posted "A" cuts in the 200-free (1:47.63), 100-free (47.56), and 100-fly (53.22).

Meanwhile, Vinícius Rossi had an "A" cut in the 100-breast (1:00.23) and a "B" cut in the 200-breast (2:16.74), Louis Glavinos Jr. had an "A" cut in the 100-back (54.32) and a "B" cut in the  200-back (2:03.85), and Luis Ambrosio posted a "B" cut in the 200-fly (2:03.72) and an "A" cut in the 200-breast (2:13.45). 

Rounding out the top performances for the Bulldogs were Martino Cervera, who had two "A" cuts in the 200-back (2:00.98) and 500-free (4:50.83), Edward Malick, who posted "B" cuts in the 100-breast (1:01.20) and 200-IM (2:02.93), and Jeffrey Snider, who also posted two "B" cuts in the 50-free (22.38) and 100-free (49.28). The last performance of note was posted by Cameron Brewer, who had a "B" cut in the 200-back (2:04.58)

For the women's team, senior Renata Cabral had three "A" cuts in the 200-free (1:58.70), 50-free (24.48), and 100-free (54.23). Meanwhile, Lexus Thompson posted an "A" cut in the 100-back (1:02.09), Tanya Eustrom had an "A" cut in the 100-free (56.57), and Kayla Yokley had a "B" cut in the 100-free (57.90).

The women's team finished off the afternoon with an "A" cut in the 400-free relay, hitting the wall in 3:46.09.

The Union College swimming teams return to action on Saturday, traveling to Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) for a meet against the host Blue Raiders and Campbellsville (Ky.).
