RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The Union volleyball team ran into a bit of bad luck Saturday as it dropped both of its matches at the University of Rio Grande (Ohio) tri-match. The Lady Bulldogs fell to Lourdes (Ohio) 3-2 in the opener and then 3-1 to host Rio Grande.

With the losses, Union drops to 2-5 on the season.

Against Lourdes, Union won the opening set 25-19 but dropped the next two 25-16 and 25-17. The Lady Bulldogs rebounded to take the fourth frame 25-17. However, Lourdes rallied for the 15-12 decision in the fifth set and the 3-2 match victory.

Caity Merritt and Cat Neumann each had 13 kills in the match with Paige Moore added 11. Chandler Gray had 21 assists, and Gabrielle Kelly recorded 29 digs, a season high.

Rio Grande took the first two sets against Union, 25-19 and 25-11, for the early 2-0 lead in the match. Union countered with a 25-18 win in the third frame, but Rio Grande locked up the 3-1 match decision with a 25-20 win in the fourth set. 

Moore paced Union with 12 kills, and Gray had 18 assists and 10 digs. Kelly added 20 digs.

Union returns to action Thursday when it plays host to Appalachian Athletic Conference newcomer St. Andrews (N.C.) at 6:30 p.m.
