CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Union volleyball team showed plenty of fight but still came up short as it lost 3-0 to No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan and 3-1 to Xavier (La.) in the Lee (Tenn.) University Classic.

The losses drop Union to 0-3 on the season. The Lady Bulldogs return to action Tuesday when they visit Cumberlands (Ky.) at 7 p.m.

Despite being swept, Union fought hard against Indiana Wesleyan as it fell 25-22, 25-19, 25-15. The Lady Bulldogs fell 25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 25-16 to Xavier in its final match of the classic.

Senior Cat Neumann had a solid day with 21 total kills, registering a team-high 14 kills against Xavier.

Union went toe-to-toe with Indiana Wesleyan during the first set but came up short 25-22. Indiana Wesleyan began to wear down the Lady Bulldogs as it took the next two frames 25-19 and 25-15 to lock up the 3-0 decision.

Caity Merritt led Union with eight kills with two others following with seven. Gabrielle Kelly helped out with 10 digs, while Hollie Hopkins recorded three total blocks.

In the finale, Union battled hard in the first two sets but fell 25-20 and 25-23 before winning the third 25-18. However, the momentum was short-lived as Xavier sealed the 3-1 match win with a 25-16 decision.

Neumann notched 14 kills with Merritt and Paige Moore adding nine apiece. Chandler Gray registered 23 assists with Kelly adding 17 digs.
