KINGSPORT, Tenn. -- Virginia Intermont posted six runs in the bottom of the third inning, and never looked back, as they held off Union College, 8-5, at the 2012 Appalachian Athletic Conference Softball Tournament on Tuesday at Domtar Park.

With the loss, Union moved to 26-16 overall on the year, and into the losers bracket at the AAC Tournament, while VI improved to 22-26 with the victory..

With the game scoreless after two and a half innings, VI exploded for six runs - all scored with two outs - in the bottom of the third off of UC starter Abby Sears to take a commanding 6-0 lead after three. In the frame, Kelli Porter had a two-RBI triple, while Katelyn Mitchell hit a back-breaking three-run home run that gave the Lady Cobras the six-run lead.

Union finally got on the board in the fifth, scoring two runs to cut the deficit down to 6-2. In the frame, Cameron Campbell had an RBI double, while pinch runner Leighanna Brett scored on a VI error. But, VI would come right back in the bottom half of the fifth, scoring two runs to go up 8-2 after five.

The Lady Bulldogs had one last chance to rally in the top of the seventh, and almost did so. After an out, Gina Loflin hit a solo home run, her fifth of the year, to make it 8-3.

Then, following a Sears single, Aryssa Puckett went yard, hitting a two-run homer over the left field fence to make it a three-run game. The homer was the fourth of the year for Puckett. However, the next two UC batters were retired, as VI held on to take the three-run victory.

Overall at the plate in the game, Puckett was 3-for-4 with two RBI, and a run scored, while Loflin and Sears both went 2-for-4. In the circle, Sears (14-6) took the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits, while striking out seven in four innings of work.

Union will next play eighth-seeded Columbia tomorrow at the AAC Tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
